.. there was a nice young man, who liked… ooh, let’s say – Snowboarding. He regularly went on Snowboarding weekends, and spent a lot of his time thinking about Snowboarding. One day he met a young lady, who hadn’t done a lot of Snowboarding – but what do you know, she took to it like a duck to water! The young couple spent a lot of time Snowboarding together, and as they had some other things in common too and seemed to get on quite well, the time came when the young man asked the young lady to be his wife.
They married, and for some time their Snowboarding carried on quite frequently, and in fact sometimes the young lady even surprised the young man with some specialist Snowboarding clothing or equipment. All was wonderful, but as time went on the young lady found that other things were taking up her time and a lot of her energy, and she couldn’t summon up quite as much enthusiasm for Snowboarding. The young man however still loved Snowboarding as much as he ever had, and so the young lady made the effort as much as she could to indulge in Snowboarding with him.
Eventually, though, she began to realise that instead of looking forward to Snowboarding, and thinking about Snowboarding, she was dreading Snowboarding. She began to make excuses not to go Snowboarding, and not only did all the specialist Snowboarding equipment disappear, but even her ordinary Snowboarding suits began to lose their edge. Eventually she stopped going Snowboarding altogether, and wouldn’t even discuss it with her husband.
For a while, the young man didn’t go Snowboarding. He’d enjoyed going so much with his wife that going with anyone else seemed wrong, somehow, and he didn’t think he’d like it very much. But as time passed he missed the Snowboarding and found it playing on his mind more and more. He tried to broach the subject several times with his wife but she rejected any suggestions, and even when he came home with a beautiful new Snowboarding outfit for her she refused to indulge him. And so the young man found himself at an impassé.
One day, whilst surfing the Internet, he came across a website displaying pictures of a lady who loved snowboarding and was looking for people to Snowboard with, and charged a fee for Snowboarding with the people she met. This was the answer! However, the young man still felt uneasy about Snowboarding with someone new, and so he raised the subject with his wife.
“Would you mind if I Snowboarded occasionally with this lady?” he asked.
“Do you want to marry her?” his wife enquired, “Aren’t we happy? Aren’t I enough for you?”
“Of course you are!” he reassured her. “I love you, and I love our marriage and our life together. I don’t want to change anything and I still enjoy all the other things we do together. But Snowboarding means a lot to me and I know you’re just not into it any more, and I worry that if I can’t ever Snowboard again it might drive a wedge between us. I don’t want to start resenting you just because Snowboarding isn’t your thing any more. ”
“Oh, that’s ok then,” said his wife. “Go ahead, enjoy your Snowboarding. Sausages for tea.”
Yes, you’re right, it’s a fairy story.
